began his playing career in the Salvation Army Band at Faversham at the
age of seven years. His first solo performance was at the age of eight,
in the town's market place with the tune "Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes,"
He became the Songster Leader (choirmaster) in the SA at Whitstable and
held that position for 20 years, subsequently taking on the position of
bandmaster for a further 20 years. He joined the Royal Navy at 16 and served
for 20 years as a Physical Training Instructor. He has traveled the world
during his service career and played in many bands both in the Royal Navy
and in the S.A. at home and abroad, including Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan.
